Footage that really makes your heart beat faster shows a Japanese climber moving freely across Mount Futago (a dormant volcano near Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. A few moments later, a bear comes out of the vegetation and attacks the man from behind. The bear most likely tried to protect its cub on its territory.
The climber managed to fend off the animal thanks to his positional advantage. He climbed back up to the summit, took a breather, and then successfully descended. The climber got away with scratches, cuts and a sprain, but no doubt feels very fortunate to have survived. An encounter with an angry bear often ends in tragedy, even if a person is armed.
