Wildfires on Rhodes force 30,000 people to evacuate

The wildfire situation in southern Rhodes, Greece, is out of control, as two fire fronts have approached the villages of Gennadi and Vati. About 30,000 locals and tourists were evacuated around noon on Sunday.

The fire has also engulfed the village of Asklipio, destroying homes, shops, and vehicles. Firefighters and volunteers were unable to stop the fire, despite their persistent attempts throughout the night.

In addition to Rhodes, wildfires are raging in northeastern Corfu, but according to the fire service, they have not yet reached residential areas.

Overnight into Monday, a message was sent via the emergency number 112 to evacuate the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palaia Perithia, Sinies, Viglaturi, Nisaki, Rou, Katavolo, Tritsi, Kokkokilas, Sarakiniatika, Plagia, Kalami, Vlahatika, and Kavalleraina.
