Earthquakes in China cause casualties and destruction

Experts from the China Earthquake Networks Center recorded a series of earthquakes in the country’s southwest.

The first, 5.4-magnitude quake was observed in Weiyuan County at 6:42 a.m. local time. The epicenter was ten kilometers deep. The second earthquake of the same magnitude occurred 140 kilometers from the city of Chengdu at 10:36 a.m. The source was at a depth of about seven kilometers.
It is known that the seismic events killed 63 people, while three more are in critical condition. The earthquakes affected a total of about 10,000 people, and almost 1,000 local residents were urgently evacuated to safe places.
According to the authorities of Neijiang, 161 buildings and facilities were significantly damaged, while 132 buildings were completely destroyed. Almost 5,000 buildings in 63 settlements suffered minor damage.
