The Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Minnis told CNN that Hurricane Dorian had killed 30 people in the region. Earlier, the death toll was estimated at 23.
Dorian reached the Abaco islands, which are located in the Northern Bahamas, on Sunday. Dorian became the strongest hurricane ever to hit the Bahamas; it wiped out entire neighborhoods and then lingered for days, destroying the same places over and over again.
About 80 people had been rescued and evacuated from the Abaco islands by Thursday morning, a government spokesman told CNN. «Most of the operations to date have been relocating and transporting the critically injured to a higher level of medical care,» said a Coast Guard official. Many of those rescued were taken to Nassau, he said.
Hotels on the Abaco and Grand Bahama islands are closed, according to the Tourism Ministry. Most of the Bahamas’ other islands are open to tourists.
