Typhoon Lekima leaves 30 people killed and 18 missing in China

According to China Central Television, the death toll from Super Typhoon Lekima has increased to 30 people, while another 18 people have gone missing.
More than 5.3 million people on the country’s east coast were affected by the typhoon. Over 1.2 million people were evacuated by the authorities. About 36,000 homes and 185,000 hectares of farmland were damaged. Preliminary damage is estimated at $2.2 billion.
From Friday to Saturday, about 250,000 people were evacuated from the coastal areas in Shanghai, with many flights cancelled.
Lekima made landfall in Zhejiang Province near the city of Wenling overnight into Saturday. The steady wind speed near the super typhoon’s center reached 50 m/s. As of today, the weather system has lost its power and is moving north to the coast of Shandong Province at 25 km/h. According to China’s national weather bureau, Lekima is the ninth typhoon to have hit the country this year and the most powerful typhoon since 2014.
