A 6.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Molucca Sea off the Indonesian coast on Sunday at about 3 p.m. local time (6 p.m. Moscow time).
The earthquake source was at a depth of 36 kilometers and its epicenter was 129 kilometers southwest of the city of Ternate.

It is known that the earthquake caused panic among the residents of the Maluku Islands. People took their belongings and left the coastal areas, moving uphill.
The government of Indonesia issued a tsunami warning. There were no immediate reports of casualties, damage, and destruction.
As previously reported, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea off the Indonesian coast in June. Its source was at a depth of 208 kilometers. There were no casualties and no destruction as a result of the quake.
