At least nine people died as a result of heavy rains in Northern Chile. This was announced by the President of Chile Sebastian Piñera on Friday night, February 8, RIA Novosti reports.
According to the head of state, heavy rains that hit Northern Chile killed three people in El Loa Province and six people in the northern macrozone. Piñera expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims and visited the affected areas.
Rivers that overflowed their banks caused serious damage to buildings and infrastructure. 820 buildings were slightly damaged, 78 badly damaged, and 75 completely destroyed. As of today, traffic on 20 roads, disrupted by the disaster, has been resumed.
The territory of El Loa Province was declared a disaster area.
