NASA is asking potential industry partners, including electric car companies, to send their ideas for a vehicle that could one day once again transport astronauts across the Moon’s surface.
«We are turning to industry to offer us exciting approaches to leverage existing systems here on Earth — including law enforcement, military, or recreational vehicles — that could be modified for use in space,» said department spokesman Steven Clarke.
According to Marshall Smith, NASA’s director of human lunar exploration programs, if we can place a lunar rover near a landing site before the arrival of the crew, the potential for a subsequent return to full-fledged exploration of the Moon will grow exponentially.
This request is part of NASA’s larger plan to return Americans to the Moon under the Artemis program. «We want our rovers on the Moon to draw on, and spur, innovations in electric vehicle energy storage and management, autonomous driving, and extreme environment resistance,» Smith added.
