Bacteria that eat and breathe electricity discovered in Yellowstone’s geysers

Researchers have found amazing microorganisms that ‘breathe’ electricity and ‘eat’ pollution in Yellowstone National Park (the US). According to scientists, the species may be hundreds of thousands of years old.

By recycling waste products, the microorganisms produce electricity, which provides them with energy.
According to experts, it is impossible to determine the exact age of the bacteria because the factors that affect the aging of the microorganisms are unknown. Their habitat is also extremely unusual. They usually live in geysers, with the water temperatures reaching 93 degrees Celsius.
To detect the bacteria, scientists have designed a potentiostat — a special device attracting organisms that interact with electricity during their lives.
The next stage of the research is scheduled for spring 2020.
