Last week, YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known as ‘MrBeast’, officially announced the #TeamTrees campaign aimed at raising $20 million by the end of 2020 for the Arbor Day Foundation to plant 20 million trees around the world.
As of last Monday, with massive support from the YouTube community, the project had already hit the $6 million mark (6 million trees). On Tuesday night, a brief Twitter exchange between blogger Marques Brownlee and entrepreneur Elon Musk prompted the latter to commit $1 million to the project.
On Monday night, @MrBeast quoted an image from @LoserFruit, adding the comment: «And so far we have planted almost 6 million.. THAT’S INSANE!»
Suddenly, Elon Musk replied: «Sounds cool. Where are the trees being planted & what kind of trees?»

The donation appeared on the #TeamTrees leaderboard Tuesday night, and Musk left just two words on the website: «For Treebeard». Musk also changed his Twitter nickname to ‘Treelon’, and his profile picture at the time of publication is an image of trees in a forest.
An hour after Musk’s donation was posted, the name of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also appeared on the page’s leaderboard with a $150,000 contribution.
Later on, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke broke Musk’s donation record and donated $1,000,001.
Donaldson described the project as the ‘largest YouTube collaboration of all time’. As of today, the video has been viewed more than 30 million times, and #TeamTrees has already surpassed the $13 million mark.
