China to create ‘artificial Sun’ in 2019

China has almost completed the development of a device that will mimic the nuclear fusion process the real Sun uses to generate energy, RIA Novosti reports citing Duan Xuru, an official at the China National Nuclear Corporation.

Physicists hope that the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) reactor will help them get a source of almost infinite energy.
According to Xuru, once completed, Tokamak will be able to achieve an ion temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius, which is about 7 times hotter than the real Sun’s ion temperature. The achievement of that temperature is a must for the development of a fusion reactor.
Last fall, Chinese scientists managed to achieve electron and ion temperatures of 100 and 50 million degrees Celsius in plasma, respectively.
