While pruning apple trees at his garden, American Andrew Sietsema was surprised to see ‘ghost apples’ hanging on the icy branches.
Sietsema posted photos of the amazing ice apples on Facebook. According to the farmer, they were a result of freezing rain that created a hard shell around the rotting apples that remained on the trees. Apples have a lower freezing point than water. The apple inside turned into complete mush, and it slipped out of the bottom of the ‘ghost apple’.
The farmer said that many of the ice apples had already fallen off the trees during pruning. The fate of the remaining sculptures will be the same. But social media users from all over the world continue to admire the fragile but beautiful creations of winter.
