China fines citizens $2.5 billion for environmental pollution

The Supreme Court of China has fined more than 40,000 citizens for environmental pollution.

According to the Supreme People’s Court, fines for environmental offenses totalled $2.5 billion, and 42,000 Chinese citizens were held accountable for causing environmental damage to the country. The figure is 21% higher than last year.
The Supreme People’s Procuratorate closed more than 251,000 cases in 2018 alone, with 2,204 of them being treated as serious environmental damage.
Chinese law enforcement agencies say that in recent years they have been working hard to identify violations associated with environmental damage. Revenue from fines amounted to 15.3 billion yuan in 2018.
